Well it turns out that everything you thought you knew about poker was all wrong. Or so I felt yesterday evening.
So far, at this point, I'm playing pretty well, picking my spots, controlling pot sizes, avoiding trickiness, and, over 3 tables, up some 125 BBs.
No notes on the BTN, but the SB has been making some questionable plays, and has been active in the chat, mostly to complain about beats. But lately he has gotten lucky and won a couple of big pots.
Full Tilt Poker, $0.25/$0.50 NL Hold'em Cash Game, 6 Players
BTN: $39.85
SB: $148.35
BB: $43.80
Hero (UTG): $56.95
MP: $67.30
CO: $50.75
Pre-Flop: A A dealt to Hero (UTG)
Hero raises to $1.75, 2 folds, BTN calls $1.75, SB calls $1.50, BB folds
Flop: ($5.75) 2 J 7 (3 Players)
SB bets $5.75,
Hero calls $5.75, <--I call here, instead of raise, assuming that I can get heads up with the somewhat crazy SB, and milk him the rest of the way down
BTN raises to $28.75, <-- And then this happens, and I begin to lose my nerve
SB calls $23,
Hero folds
This just seemed like the right place to fold. This is the spot that I've never been able to avoid in the past, but I'm immediately proud of my fold. No way I'm good here.
Turn: ($69) 7 (2 Players)
SB bets $69, BTN calls $9.35 and is All-In
River: ($87.70) 8 (2 Players - 1 is All-In)
Results: $87.70 Pot ($3 Rake)
BTN showed J Q (two pair, Jacks and Sevens) and LOST (-$39.85 NET)
SB showed J A (two pair, Jacks and Sevens) and WON $84.70 (+$44.85 NET)
WHAT!?!?!? Massive raise with TP-Third Kicker? Call with TPTK? Disgusting...I was expecting to see at least one set, possibly a loose 2-pair. A flop that dry, with that much action?
This hand has almost definitely set me up to stack off every time I hold AA and my opponent flops a set, for at least the next 2 months.
So of course I make some notes about these fools. And I get another shot at the SB a short time later...
Full Tilt Poker, $0.25/$0.50 NL Hold'em Cash Game, 6 Players
BB: $50
UTG: $197.30 <-- Same player as SB in previous HH
MP: $21.50
Hero (CO): $50
BTN: $67.80
SB: $56.35
Pre-Flop: J T dealt to Hero (CO)
UTG raises to $1.75, MP folds, Hero calls $1.75, 3 folds
Flop: ($4.25) 9 5 2 (2 Players)
UTG bets $0.50,
Hero calls $0.50 <-- Nope, I don't ever fold to the donklead.
Turn: ($5.25) J (2 Players)
UTG bets $5.25,
Hero calls $5.25 <-- Getting there.
River: ($15.75) T (2 Players)
UTG bets $0.50, <-- Laughable
Hero raises to $17.25, <-- A larger raise than I normally make, counting on this joker to make a bad call with AJ.
UTG raises to $67.50,
Hero calls $25.25 and is All-In <-- Bad bad bad. Crying call, expecting to see a set of 9s, maybe JJ.
Results: $100.75 Pot ($3 Rake)
UTG showed Q K (a straight, King high) and WON $97.75 (+$47.75 NET)
Hero mucked J T (two pair, Jacks and Tens) and LOST (-$50 NET)
Gross. I let my insistence that this guy was a joker get in the way of his obvious strength, shown by pushing on the end. And like that, my profitable session is shot.
One more HH to pass along. I was going to do a "Sweet and Sour Hands Of The Day" thing, but then I realized that I left my Sweet HH on my machine at home. So it's all Sour, all the time here for today.
Sour Hand Of The Day
Full Tilt Poker, $0.25/$0.50 NL Hold'em Cash Game, 5 Players
SB: $33.90
BB: $20

BTN: $50
Pre-Flop: K A dealt to Hero (UTG)
Hero calls $0.50, 2 folds, SB raises to $2, BB folds, Hero calls $1.50
My new thing is calling a PFR with AK. I'm not sure how to make AK a big winner otherwise.
Flop: ($4.50) 6 8 8 (2 Players)
SB checks, Hero checks
Turn: ($4.50) K (2 Players)
SB bets $0.50,
Hero raises to $3,
SB calls $2.50
River: ($10.50) 4 (2 Players)
SB bets $0.50,
Hero raises to $4,
SB raises to $12, <-- I smell a trap...
Hero calls $8 <-- But walk right in anyways.
Results: $34.50 Pot ($1.70 Rake)
SB showed 8 8 (four of a kind, Eights) and WON $32.80 (+$15.80 NET)
Hero mucked K A (two pair, Kings and Eights) and LOST (-$17 NET)
Donklead on two streets with quads. But there's no way I should be calling on the end there. I hate AK.
